Adventure Camp for Kids
Adventure Camp started in 2001 as an idea to enhance our Eden Alternative Program, by bringing kids in to interact with the residents. The program is open to children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews of Golden Age Home staff ages 3-12 years old.
The “day camp” has varied from one to two-weeks during the summer held from 8a.m. to 4p.m. Monday-Friday. This unique camp offers the children a chance to have contact with the elderly, who may not have otherwise had any with their own grandparents. Another bonus is that it allows the children a chance to do some things they may not have the opportunity to do. Outings have included trips to museums, tour of Pizza Hut, trip to Sematec to see what goes into making computer chips, visiting a donkey farm, pool day, and movie day. Each year Capital Area Zoo brings animals to the facility for both the residents and children to enjoy. Many of the outings are made possible by donations from individuals, fundraising at our annual Spring Fling event, and discounts or donation from area businesses. The cost for the children to attend Adventure Camp is free to the employees.
Residents have an opportunity to get involved with the children in a variety of ways. Residents have taught science classes using their private collections of fossils, or shells, read to the youngest group at naptime, performed puppet shows, or taught arts and crafts, or needlework. The children interact with the residents by hosting the monthly birthday parties, providing the entertainment, decorations, and helping to decorate the cake or cupcakes; playing games such as chess, cards or dominos; leading and participating in the daily exercise session, and making crafts.
During Adventure Camp, relationships are developed between the residents and the children, as well as the children themselves that last far beyond the one or two weeks of camp.
