Adventure Camp 2009 Recap
Adventure Camp began on July 20, 2009, with approximately 50 children. This is one of the largest groups since the creation of Adventure Camp in 2001. Students enjoyed helping the Activity Department with our residents’ daily activities such as bingo, exercise and table games. The residents enjoy the opportunity to watch the children when they come to help and visit. This year the students did their craft time in the Personal Care activity room allowing the residents to interact.
Special activities were arranged for both the children and residents during this week. The students saw a puppet show put together by the residents and staff. Capital Area Zoo brought out several animals to educate the audience. The students were also able to attend things within the community such as swimming and going to the movies. The children were divided into three groups. The 3-5 year old group was taught by Carol Ohlendorf with Chelsea Cardenas as the student helper. Carol has been a kindergarten teacher for more than 20 years and has worked with Adventure Camp for the last four years. Chelsea, a 2009 Lockhart graduate, was a participant several years ago and has been a student helper for the past three years. Crystal Kelly, a teacher for the Bluebonnet Elementary School was the lead teacher for the 6-8 year olds. Crystal has been helping with Adventure Camp since it was started in 2001. Lexy Marquine, a junior at Lockhart High School, was a new student helper this year. Also new to Adventure Camp was Gina Lozano, a high school teacher for Hays ISD. Gina lead the 9-12 year old group with the help of Jamie Bennett, a 2009 Lockhart graduate. Although Gina was a new teacher for Adventure camp, Jamie has been a student helper for the past three years.Adventure Camp started in 2001 as an idea to enhance our Eden Alternative Program, by bringing kids in to interact with the residents. The program is open to children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews of Golden Age Home staff ages 3-12 years old.
